English:
Space Cowboy as the name might suggest is a space shooter. But it is not your ordinary; run of the mill space shooter. It is an outstanding space shooter: one of the best that this author has ever played! The graphics are well done with many different types of colorful explosions and all sorts of eye candy with resolutions ranging from 640x480 to 1024x768 in 16 or 32 bit color. To give this 2D game a 3D look the author has added moving/scrolling star fields which which can be turned off if you use a slow computer. When you steer the ship left or right the angle of the ship changes to further enhance this 3d effect. Most objects have shadows to indicate depth. The sound effects and the music are in stereo and are excellent. For slower computers the sound can be set to mono.
There are three levels of game play: easy, normal and hard. And for the inexpereienced player there is even a training level to familiarize yourself with the controls, weapons systems and other aspects of the game. The game is easy to learn with only having 16 keyboard controls but it is hard to master, as the levels/missions progressively get more dificult.
There are 14 different types of power ups which can be "collected" during the game. Most of these items are for the weapons sytems, but some will restore health, armor or even give you an extra ship (life). You will also encounter secret items during the levels.
A very nice feature of the game is its selectable ability to to "save game". When on, the highest completed level is saved, so that when you "load game" the next level you play will be the one which you have not yet completed.
Console:
This game has a console, which is a command line interface that allows you to type in commands; primarily so that you can cheat. The usage of the console is explained in the English/German html manual. But briefly, if you want to be invincable you would open up the console and type, "player godmode 1" (without the quotes of course), then nothing will hurt you.
In the console you are able to get help by typing "list all". The last command which is displayed when this is entered, is in error. (The "i" and the "c" were transposed.) The line which displays is...
"player speical" + 1 - 3
The correct display shoud be
"player special" + 1 - 3
For example when you type in (from the console), "player special 3" (without quotes), you will be given one, special weapon 3.
Highscores:
The top 10 high scores are saved locally and there is an internet high score keeper for the top 100 world wide high scores. NOTE: If you acheive a high score by cheating, you will prevented from uploading it to the internet.
Keyboard Controls:
Arrows = Move
Space = Fire
V = Fire 1st Special Weapon
B = Fire 2nd Special Weapon
N = Fire 3rd Special Weapon
T = Cross Hairs on/off
P - Pause.
ESC - Back to the menu/Quit current game.
F9 - Display FPS.
F10 - Reset screen (in the case of errors etc.)
F11 - Screen Shot
F12 - Open Console
